Best Shopify product image sizes, tested

Use square images at 2048 by 2048 pixels for product photos. That size fills Shopify's maximum zoom, stays under sensible file weights when compressed, and matches the 1:1 ratio most themes grid cleanly. Whatever size you choose, keep every product image in a set at the same aspect ratio so collection pages align.

Why 2048 by 2048

Shopify accepts images up to 4472 by 4472 pixels, but zoom features top out well below that and file weight grows fast. 2048 square gives shoppers a crisp zoom and compresses to 200 to 400 KB in WebP or quality-80 JPEG, which keeps product pages quick on mobile.

Consistency beats size

Mixed aspect ratios are the silent conversion killer: collection grids jump around and crops cut off product edges. Pick one ratio, square or 4:5 portrait, and reshoot or crop everything to match. The grid alignment does more for perceived quality than extra resolution.

Format and compression

Export photos as WebP where your workflow allows, or JPEG at quality 80. Reserve PNG for graphics that need transparency. Run every image through a compressor before upload; a 2 MB photo straight from a camera costs you mobile load time for zero visible gain.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum Shopify product image size?
Shopify accepts up to 4472 by 4472 pixels or 20 megapixels. There is no reason to upload at the maximum; zoom and display never use it and the file weight hurts load speed.
Should product images be square or portrait?
Square is the safest default across themes. Portrait 4:5 shows garments well and is common in fashion. Pick one and apply it to every product.
Does Shopify compress my images automatically?
Yes, Shopify generates resized versions and serves them through its CDN. It still pays to upload a reasonably compressed original, since the largest served version derives from what you upload.
